The XY shield is basically just a dual DAC and two pots. The DAC can be used to control an XY CRT oscilloscope to display things, including a clock and pong clone. The first iteration smoothed the Arduino's PWM outputs to produce the analog voltages, but the smoothing wasn't perfect and made fast scanning difficult.
